Ending Period Poverty and Menstrual Stigma in Rural Northern India
The Issue
We believe that no girl or woman should be held back because of something as natural as menstruation.
In many rural parts of Northern India, including states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, period poverty is still a real and serious issue. A lot of girls and women still do not have proper access to affordable menstrual products, clean and safe toilets, or accurate education about menstrual health. On top of that, periods are still surrounded by stigma and silence, where they are often seen as something “unclean” or shameful.
Because of this, many girls end up missing school during their periods. Over time, this can affect their learning, confidence, and future opportunities, and for some, it can even lead to dropping out of school completely. This is not just about health. It is about equality, dignity, and basic human rights.
We believe change is needed. We support:
• Better access to affordable and safe menstrual products in rural Northern India
• Clean, private, and safe washrooms in schools and communities
• Better education about menstruation for both boys and girls to help reduce stigma
• Community awareness to break myths and silence around periods in rural areas
By signing this petition, you are supporting dignity, equality, and the right of every girl in Northern India to go to school and live without shame or barriers because of menstruation.
