End Zoo Cruelty and Prioritise Animal Conservation and Welfare

End Zoo Cruelty and Prioritise Animal Conservation and Welfare
The Issue
We are a group of aspiring veterinary and biology students, deeply troubled by the culpable negligence and cruelty animals face in zoos across the globe. Despite the façade of protection and conservation, zoos have often fallen short of their mandate to protect animals, favoring human entertainment over well-being of the very creatures they claim to care for.
Research indicates that many animals living in zoos face chronic stress and behavioral abnormalities (Mason & Latham, 2004). This stems not only from an unnatural habitat but also poor diet, inadequate stimulation, and the general lack of respect for these sentient beings.
We demand that strict welfare legislation gets enforced in zoos worldwide. These should include living conditions replicating natural habitats, provision for mental stimulation, and animal health care parity to those in the wild. Coupled with this, zoos should actively champion long-term conservation efforts to ensure the survival of species for generations to come.
In cases where animals are rehabilitated after injury or sickness, efforts should be made for their safe reintroduction into the wild. This is crucial as living in a zoo often degrades their survival capabilities (Swaisgood &Shepherdson, 2005).
By signing this petition, you are supporting a shift from zoos merely serving as an entertainment hub, towards becoming citadels of conservation, education, and animal welfare. Please sign and share this petition. We as the future guardians of animal health and welfare, urge you to act responsibly towards our co-inhabitants of earth. Your signature can make a radical difference in the lives of these zoo animals.
