End workplace disability discrimination in Waterville

The Issue

I am a long-time employee in Waterville, ME, and I live with a brain injury that affects my motor skills. I have also been diagnosed with mental health issues, which make certain tasks more challenging for me. Despite my dedication and hard work over the past five years, my new General Manager has singled me out, belittling me in front of coworkers and drastically cutting my work hours from nearly full time to just one day a week. His reasoning, as he told me, was 'just because he can.' He has even gone so far as to accuse me of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, all while being aware that I have a reconstructed jaw and face.

This is not an isolated case. Many individuals with disabilities face similar discrimination across workplaces in Waterville and beyond. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 19.3% of people with a disability were employed in 2019, compared to 66.3% of people without a disability. Discrimination and stigmatization in the workplace contribute greatly to this disparity.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted to protect individuals with disabilities from unfair treatment at work. However, enforcement remains weak, and many employers lack understanding of their obligations. This issue extends beyond legality; it is a matter of dignity and respect for individuals who, like everyone else, seek to contribute to their workplaces and communities.

I urge the City Council of Waterville and local businesses to take concrete steps to combat workplace discrimination. Employers should actively educate themselves and their staff about the rights of employees with disabilities under the ADA. Implementing mandatory sensitivity training, creating clear anti-discrimination policies, and establishing safe reporting mechanisms for employees who face discrimination are critical steps towards fostering an inclusive environment.

This petition is not just about my story; it’s about standing up for all individuals who face similar challenges and indignities. I ask you to join me in demanding action from our local leaders. Let's work together to ensure that every individual, regardless of their disability, is treated with the fairness and respect they deserve.

Please sign this petition to make a difference. Stand with me in calling for an end to workplace disability discrimination in Waterville, ME. Together, we can create a more inclusive and respectful community.
