End Window-Shattering Noise at the Chicago Thunderbird Air Show

The Issue

On Friday during the Chicago Air and Water Show, residents along the Lakefront were startled by two massive booms that shook windows, set off car alarms, and even shattered glass in several high-rise lobbies. Many described the blasts as sounding like an earthquake or even a bomb.

Videos from the event — and expert review from an aeronautics professor at the University of Illinois — suggest the Thunderbirds’ F-16 jets may have created sonic booms. The Air Force has denied this, but the evidence is clear: shock waves were generated that rattled homes and endangered public safety.

This isn’t the first time. In 2012, the Thunderbirds admitted to going supersonic during a practice in Arizona, paying over $22,000 in damages. In 2021, the Blue Angels caused over $180,000 in property damage and injured a dozen people after unleashing an intense sonic airflow signature during a practice run in California. These incidents show the risks are real, not imagined.

Chicago families should not have to bear the cost — financially or emotionally — of city-sponsored entertainment. Residents were told to file insurance claims, but why should homeowners and tenants pay for damage caused by an Air Force demonstration at a city-run event? Accountability lies with city leaders and federal partners who brought the jets here and set the rules for their demonstrations.

Noise enforcement in Chicago is already inconsistent, with overlapping jurisdictions between departments. Now, after shattered windows and shaken communities, it’s clear the city must establish strict standards: no maneuvers that risk sonic booms, real-time monitoring of jet speed, and a transparent process for compensation when damage occurs.

We are calling on Mayor Brandon Johnson, the Chicago City Council, and the U.S. Air Force to accept responsibility, compensate affected residents, and establish stronger protections to ensure this never happens again.

Sign this petition to demand accountability and safety at Chicago’s Air and Water Show. Residents deserve celebration, not shattered windows.
