End Unsanctioned Large Group Activities at Independence Park when Fieldhouse is Closed
The Issue
Petition to End Unsanctioned Large Group Activities at Independence Park when Park Fieldhouse is Closed
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the increasing occurrences of unsanctioned large group activities taking place at Independence Park after the main field house has closed. While we appreciate the park's role as a communal space for recreation and gatherings during designated hours, the continuation of such activities after the Fieldhouse closes presents significant issues for the community and the park itself.
These unsanctioned and unpermitted gatherings/Sport Leagues often lead to disturbances, amplified noise pollution, littering, public urination, drinking of alcohol, and illegal parking which all disrupt the tranquility of the park and compromise the safety and well-being of nearby residents. Moreover, the lack of oversight during these gatherings raises concerns about potential illegal activities and damage to park property. These activities further degrade the park environment and pose risks to public health and safety.
We believe it is imperative for the local authorities to take action to enforce and prevent unauthorized large group/Sports League activities after the Fieldhouse closes. By doing so, we can preserve the integrity of the park as a safe and welcoming space for all members of the community to enjoy. Therefore, we urge the Local Government, The Chicago Park District Management and the Chicago Police Department to:
1. Increase patrols and surveillance around Independence Park during off-hours to deter unsanctioned large group activities and illegal activities including ticketing illegally parked cars, stopping amplified sound, ticket and remove those with alcohol, telling Sports Leagues/groups larger than 50 to disperse and shutting down the illegal food vendors.
2. Implement stricter penalties for individuals found engaging in unauthorized activities after hours.
3. Collaborate with community organizations to promote awareness about the importance of respecting park regulations and guidelines.
4. Explore solutions, such as providing these groups with alternative sites or ideas, and to accommodate the needs of other park users without compromising public safety and order.
We believe that by taking proactive measures to address this issue, we can ensure that Independence Park remains a cherished community asset for generations to come. Together, let's uphold the principles of responsible stewardship and mutual respect for our shared public spaces. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
