End The Use of Consumer Reporting in Washington Auto Insurance Rate Determinations

The Issue

I am a Washington citizen burdened by the excessive cost of auto insurance, a struggle shared by countless others. My personal experience has led me to note the unbalanced influence of consumer reporting in shaping auto insurance premiums. From $689 a month for a 2016 Buick Verano (base model), our rates are unrealistically inflated, driven not by our driving records, but our credit scores.

The existing law allows auto insurance providers access to consumer reporting companies like LexisNexis for rate determination. This practice disproportionately affects low income individuals and those struggling to make ends meet. The cost is hefty, and the criteria unreasonable: a flawless driving record, marred solely by a lower credit score.

But are we not all entitled to fair and equitable treatment? Particularly when there is no statistical evidence correlating higher insurance claims with lower credit scores. It’s crucial to recognize that insurance rates should be computed on factors strictly related to driving, not personal finance.

Our state needs a more equitable system, one grounded in a person's driving record not their credit history. For this reason, we propose that Washington legislators change the current auto insurance approach and restrict providers from using credit scores in rate determinations.

Stand with us today, for a fairer tomorrow. Put the brakes on undue financial burdens and help steer towards a right path. Sign this petition to encourage policy change - let's end the use of consumer reporting in Washington's car insurance rate determinations.
