End the Use of Cancer-Linked Chemicals in Flamingo Point (Indoors + Outdoors)

The Issue

The residents of Flamingo Point, are calling for an immediate halt to the use of cleaning products, pesticides, and synthetic fragrances that are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and respiratory harm.

WHO IS IMPACTED?

Every day, children, pets, tenants, and cleaning staff in our building are exposed to chemicals linked to cancer—through indoor cleaners, synthetic air fresheners, and pesticides used around the property. Products like Fabuloso, which contains glycol ethers and quaternary ammonium compounds, have been associated with respiratory damage, endocrine disruption, and increased cancer risk (NIH Study, 2021).

The American Lung Association warns that cleaning products and indoor air pollutants can increase the risk of asthma, chronic lung disease, and even cancer (ALA source).

Outdoor areas are regularly treated with synthetic fragrances and pesticides, exposing residents, animals, and workers to harmful VOCs, hormone disruptors, and compounds linked to leukemia, lymphoma, and reproductive harm (American Academy of Pediatrics).

WHAT IS AT STAKE?

If we do nothing, we allow this building—our home—to continue being a source of chronic toxic exposure. That means:

  • Children’s developing lungs and brains are at risk.
  • Pets may suffer preventable cancers and neurological issues.
  • Cleaning staff and groundskeepers will continue to face dangerous, cumulative occupational exposures.
  • Tenants will keep breathing indoor air that may be 2–5x more polluted than outdoor air (EPA).

This is not about cleanliness—it’s about protecting life and health in the place we call home.

WHY IS NOW THE TIME TO ACT?

Safe, non-toxic alternatives exist.

There are EPA Safer Choice and OMRI-certified products that clean just as effectively without harming human or environmental health. Brands like Branch Basics, Force of Nature, and Seventh Generation Professional offer verified, fragrance-free, and non-toxic solutions.

With more families, animals, and long-term residents than ever before, we have a responsibility to ensure our building reflects values of safety, sustainability, and well-being. The science is clear. The time is now.

WHAT WE WANT BUILDING MANAGEMENT TO DO:

  • Immediately cease use of cleaning and maintenance products rated “D” or “F” by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
  • Eliminate all synthetic air fresheners and fragrance-based products, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Stop spraying conventional pesticides on lawns, courtyards, and walkways unless certified non-toxic and pet-safe.
  • Switch to EPA Safer Choice or OMRI-listed alternatives, such as: Force of Nature, Branch Basics, Seventh Generation Professional, EcoLogic or Cedarcide (for non-toxic pest control)
  • Notify tenants in advance of any chemical treatments used on the property going forward.

We believe our homes should be safe, not silently hazardous.

We believe in protecting children, pets, workers, and neighbors.

We believe the building management does, too.

Let’s align our cleaning practices with the science—and with our values.

Sincerely,

Residents of Flamingo Point
