End the UK's Dependent Immigration Status

End the UK's Dependent Immigration Status
The Issue
We demand an end to immigration systems that trap vulnerable people in cycles of abuse by tying their legal residency to sponsors (i.e., spouses). This dependency creates a deadly power imbalance where abusers weaponise deportation threats to enforce silence, trapping victims in exploitation, violence, and modern slavery.
“When survival depends on a sponsor’s mercy, the law isn’t protecting victims…it’s arming abusers".
This is especially catastrophic for those with nowhere safe to return. Syrian refugees still face persecution. Ethnic minorities, divorced individuals, and women/men from communities that practice honour-based violence risk murder, familial retaliation, or state oppression if deported, especially if seen as ‘disgraced’ (e.g., leaving a marriage, or rejecting cultural norms). For them, deportation isn’t relocation; it’s sadly an almost literal death sentence.
This crisis isn’t theoretical. It’s in our communities. According to a recent CWASU (2023) evaluation, 75% of migrant domestic violence survivors had their Immigration status used as a form of control by their abusers. And 45% of abuse survivors reported explicit deportation threats used to force compliance with the abuser's demands.
I’ve also witnessed this horror first-hand among Syrian women in the UK – survivors of war re-trapped by residency laws that handed their abuser’s absolute power. Their stories echo the harrowing four-year ordeal laid bare in ‘The Shadows of Sanctuary’, where a mother and daughter endured systematic disatvatage solely because immigration rules trapped them with their tormentor. In their silence, you hear the same choked fear: ‘Where can I run when my visa chains me to my abuser?’.
⚠️ Existing solutions like The Migrant Victims of Domestic Abuse Concession (MVDAC), though well-intentioned, drown under legal jargon, where most survivors get lost in a maze of complex legal work. Victims relive trauma not just at home, but in courtrooms and immigration offices. Where victims often fail to learn their rights because seeking help can seem like a hidden riddle for many.
This is why we ask for genuine REFORM, not a mere red tape:
✅ Automatic residency to ALL abuse survivors upon a credible report
✅ Sponsor-free visas severed from sponsor control
✅ Trauma support in ALL languages
SIGN if you believe NO ONE should be forced to choose between deportation and death.
