End the Time Change in Ontario - Choose Daylight Savings Time and Stay With it Year Round!
The Issue
This petition is to get rid of the time changes every year, and to switch to the Daylight Savings Time all year round (more daylight in the evening).
It has been long overdue to stop switching our clocks twice a year. The "Spring Forward" and "Fall Back" time changes have negative health effects, including higher rate of car accidents, heart attack, and workplace injuries. These effects have led to many countries to abolish the time change and pick one time to use all year round. In most cases, the time selected is the Daylight Saving Time rather than the Standard Time as it provides more light in the evening and less light in the morning. This time period is when most people are more active, so daylight during the evening is more beneficial. Using Standard Time, the earliest sunrises occur at around 4:30am, at which time most people are sleeping.
If we decide to use Daylight Time all year round it will eliminate the negative health effects and would allow for more daylight in the evening, especially in the winter when the days are particularly short (sunset on standard time on Dec 21st in Toronto is at 4:43pm). It is time for Ontario, and Canada as a whole, to move away from the unnecessary time changes and choose a time zone that makes sense!
In November 2020, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario passed Bill 214, the Time Amendment Act, 2020, which will establish year-round observation of daylight saving time; however, the act does not come into force immediately; instead, it takes effect on a day to be named by proclamation of the Ontario lieutenant governor under the advisory of the province's attorney general.
Although all of Saskatchewan is geographically within the Mountain Time Zone, the province officially observes Central Time year-round to put their clocks on the local Daylight Savings time.
Similarly, three communities located in Ontario; Pickle Lake, Atikokan, and New Osnaburgh, lie within the Central Time Zone in northwestern Ontario – however they observe Eastern Standard Time year-round as their Daylight Savings time zone.
In 2018 California passed Proposition 7, making Daylight Saving Time year-round and permanent. Other states who have proposed legislation include the following:
Alaska
Alabama
Arkansas
Colorado
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Louisiana
Maine
Michigan
Minnesota
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nevada
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
West Virginia
Wyoming
Some states had put forth legislation to be on Atlantic Standard Time, a time zone one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time that essentially puts them on year-round Daylight Saving Time. These include Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
