The current academic calendar for the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) extends into June, after Memorial Day. This late end to the school year can be challenging for families who wish to plan summer activities and vacations. Moreover, studies have shown that students are more productive when they have a longer summer break (National Education Association). By ending the school year before Memorial Day, we can ensure that our students are getting the most out of their educational experience while also accommodating family schedules. We urge SMSD to reconsider its academic calendar and make this change for the benefit of our students and families in Prairie Village, KS, USA.
