Haughton Elementary School has been enforcing a policy of turning out lights during lunchtime to discourage students from engaging in conversation. This is sparking concerns as it limits students' social interaction, a crucial part of their development. When observed personally, it was seen that students were not excessively loud, but simply engaging in normal conversation. It's concerning that we are discouraging children from cultivating their social skills in what is already limited free time during the school day. Additionally, the practice of rewarding quietness with PBIS points seems misguided. Conversations should be encouraged not discouraged among students. The American Academy of Pediatrics highlighted the importance of peer interaction for children's social-emotional development.
