The Issue
I am a passionate betta fish owner, and my personal experience has driven me to speak out about the needless suffering of these beautiful creatures. Out of the three bettas I own, I had to nurse two back to health. They were on the brink of death because of the deplorable conditions they were kept in before I brought them home. Pet stores often house bettas in small cups without filtration, heat, or proper care. This is a widespread issue, leading to unnecessary suffering and death for countless bettas each day.
Betta fish, like all living creatures, deserve a chance to live in an environment where they can thrive. The current practice of keeping them in tiny containers at pet stores is not only cruel but also detrimental to their health. Without proper care, including a heated and filtered environment, bettas are prone to stress, illness, and, eventually, premature death.
Studies show that bettas require a stable, heated environment set between 76°F to 82°F and proper water filtration to live healthy lives. When housed in small cups, they don't get the necessary oxygen flow needed to survive, leading to an agonizing existence and often, untimely death. For a species that naturally inhabits warm, slow-moving waters with rich vegetation, a plastic cup is a nightmare.
Pet stores need to take responsibility and provide betta fish with adequate conditions that reflect their natural habitat. This includes offering them larger tanks equipped with filtration systems, appropriate heating, and regular water changes. Adopting these changes will not only improve the lives of these creatures but also likely increase customer satisfaction, as buyers are more likely to purchase healthy, vibrant fish.
By signing this petition, you are demanding that pet stores across the country reform their practices concerning the care of betta fish. Let us come together to end this inhumane treatment and provide bettas with the chance to live full, healthy lives from the moment they arrive at a pet store. Please sign and share this petition to bring an end to the misery experienced by these gentle creatures every day.
