End the perimenopause diagnosis crisis in Ireland

The Issue

I started Peri Project Ireland because I am living this nightmare myself. Like so many Irish women, I spent months trying to understand what was happening to my body. Exhaustion, brain fog, and symptoms that don't fit neatly into any diagnostic box left me frustrated and desperate for answers. Unfortunately, like many of my peers, I was dismissed by a healthcare system not equipped to recognise perimenopause.

This isn't about blaming GPs. Women like me are compelled to return repeatedly to clinics with individual symptoms that, more often than not, should already be addressed with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or appropriate supports when this isn't suitable. This ongoing cycle adds unnecessary pressure to an already overstretched system and leaves women suffering needlessly.

The lack of proper training and awareness among healthcare professionals is at the heart of this issue. With better education and resources, GPs can provide the support women desperately need during this pivotal stage of their lives. According to a study by the Women's Health Institute, over 80% of women will experience perimenopausal symptoms by the age of 50, highlighting the urgent need for change in medical education and practice.

Without timely treatment women run the risk of diseases of the bones, brain and heart and a reduced quality of life.  There is an increase in suicide of women in this age range.

Perimenopause is a natural phase of life, and yet too many are left to navigate it alone, feeling ignored and invalidated. We need a comprehensive framework ensuring that all healthcare professionals receive the necessary training in diagnosing and managing perimenopause.  Too many Doctors think women are too young (it can start from 35+, earlier is possible), that they aren't in peri when they still have a period (untrue) and if bloods are normal they aren't in peri (again, untrue).

Join me in advocating for change by calling on the Minister for Health to allocate funds for nationwide training programs on perimenopause recognition and treatment. We must make sure future generations of women in Ireland do not have to suffer in silence.
