End the Nighttime Noise Disturbance on the Dallas North Tollway

The Issue

For decades, the area along the Dallas North Tollway—between Northwest Highway and I-635—has been a place residents could call home while still enjoying a reasonable sense of peace. What was once a distant and manageable hum of city life has become a persistent and escalating disturbance.

In recent years, noise levels have increased dramatically—especially at night. Residents are routinely awakened by the sound of speeding cars and motorcycles, many with modified mufflers designed to amplify noise. Evenings outdoors are cut short, and the sense of peace in surrounding neighborhoods has steadily eroded.

This is not just an inconvenience. Persistent high noise levels are linked to sleep disruption, elevated stress, and long-term health impacts. Excessive roadway noise also diminishes overall quality of life for nearby communities. There is growing concern about organized groups of drivers and riders who gather in this corridor, contributing to spikes in both noise and unsafe driving behavior. Handling incidents individually has not solved the underlying problem, which continues to impact residents on a nightly basis.

We, the residents along the Dallas North Tollway, are calling on the City of Dallas, the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA), and the Texas Highway Patrol to take coordinated action to address this growing issue.

Specifically, we are requesting the following:

1. Increased Nighttime Enforcement Presence
A more consistent and visible enforcement presence along the DNT during late-night hours, particularly between 9 PM and 7 AM, to address excessive vehicle noise, unsafe speeds, and related disturbances.

2. Comprehensive Noise Study and Mitigation Planning
A formal noise study along this stretch of the Dallas North Tollway to measure current levels, identify peak disturbance times and primary sources, and provide the data needed to evaluate effective mitigation strategies such as sound barriers or targeted enforcement.

3. Evaluation and Implementation of Technology-Based Enforcement Solutions

Consideration and implementation of emerging tools—such as automated noise detection systems already in use in cities like New York and Miami—to support consistent, data-driven enforcement of existing noise regulations.

Communities are best equipped to address issues that are clearly measured, documented, and followed by thoughtful, data-driven action. These steps represent a practical path toward restoring livability and protecting the wellbeing of residents in this area.

If you live, work, or travel through this corridor—or simply believe neighborhoods deserve reasonable peace—please add your name today. Your signature sends a clear message that action is needed now.
