End the Maternal Mental Health Crisis in Europe

Le problème

Who is affected?

More than half of all mothers report struggling with maternal mental health issues! Across Europe, it is mothers who bear the brunt of childcare and unpaid domestic work, often at the expense of their careers, financial independence, and personal well-being. This overwhelming responsibility, combined with workplace rigidity and inadequate policy support, leads to high rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout.

Despite the urgent need, maternal mental health remains underfunded, overlooked, and stigmatised.

What is at stake?

When mothers suffer from mental health challenges, it doesn’t just affect them—it impacts their children, their family, the workplaces, and the whole of society.

  • Children of mothers experiencing mental health struggles are 3 times more at risk of emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues (World Health Organisation)
  • The economic cost of untreated maternal mental health issues is staggering, with lost productivity, increased healthcare needs, and strained social services. The estimated cost of maternal mental health issues in the French healthcare system is approximately €1.5 billion per year. (Source: OECD Health Statistics)
  • Without action, the cycle of disadvantage will continue for future generations: 40-60% of children with parents who have mental health conditions will also face similar struggles later in life. (Source: National Institute of Mental Health)

Why is now the time to act?

The pressure on mothers has never been greater. General instability, rigid work structures, and the rising cost of living are worsening stress levels. The time to act is now—to break the stigma, provide proper support, and ensure that maternal mental health is a political priority.

We call on European policymakers to take immediate action by:

  1. Breaking the silence around maternal mental health through public awareness campaigns and education.
  2. Guaranteeing universal access to maternal mental health services in every country, including early screening, specialised perinatal mental health support, and affordable therapy.
  3. Funding dedicated maternal mental health services and training for healthcare providers
  4. Implementing paid parental leaves and adapted work policies to reduce stress and support mothers in balancing work and family life.
  5. Investing in community-based support networks to combat isolation and provide mental health resources.

We need thousands of voices to push leaders into action.
