Not long ago, a new law in Kentucky bans cell phone use and all personal devices. Many students have come out to say that this law could potentially be dangerous for not only the schools, but the students and staff members.

This past school year, lots of states/districts have had problems with school shootings & school threats. Unfortunately my school was one of many that had gotten many threats/ lockdowns. These things have become a huge problem in society. This creates constant fear & panic towards the family’s. The reason being them not being positive if their child will come home safely or being safe in school buildings.

During one lockdown at our school, we were told that it was just a practical drill. The drill ended but were told we would be staying in our classes longer than usual. We as students thought nothing of it just cause we thought it was a practical drill. Later on in the day, word spread that a student had bought a firearm in the building. Students were scared. Students started calling and texting their parents to pick them up, Parents waiting outside in fear. The reason parents were notified is because of students, if it weren’t for the cell phones the students had, the school would have absolutely done nothing to inform parents about the situation. They only informed parents after students started missing instructional hours due to parents being afraid to leave their children at school not knowing what would happen to them or if the incident will repeat.

As a person and a student, it angers me to see that law makers were more focused on the fact students have their cell phones at school, than addressing the terrible gun violence we have in our country and how much it impacts many communities. Cellphones can be distractive its facts, but they are also the same thing that helps instances like these not get worse than they even were. Cell phones not only help students communicate but it helps students receive important information, stay connected to their emergency contacts, and feel safer knowing they have an option to call for help. 

These are reasons why students NEED their electronic devices at school. Phones can be esentials that help stufent
