End the Georgina Street Dump – A call to introduce landscaping at the Georgina Street Gate

The issue

Georgina Street holds significant historical value, representing the backbone of the Hollis Park conservation area, with documented records dating back to 1806.

The remnants of the gate that once bordered the esteemed Kettle Estate, now known as Hollis Park, Georgina Street, Fitzroy Street, and Warren Ball Avenue, are unfortunately becoming a focal point for illegal dumping. These gates, once part of a historical estate, are now turning into an eyesore and pose a risk to the community. Regrettably, one of the two historic pillars recently fell victim to a vehicle disposing of waste, further highlighting the severity of the issue.

In recent years, we have observed trucks depositing various forms of waste, including hazardous materials from resident relocations and builders discarding waste from newly completed fit-out works of restaurants and retailers along King Street. This not only diminishes the aesthetic appeal of the area but also poses significant safety hazards. Personally, I was compelled to write this letter when my child narrowly avoided stepping on glass scattered across the footpath. Additionally, we often witness vehicles and bikes having to manoeuvre around debris, putting both pedestrians and road users at risk.

These recurring safety concerns are not only distressing but also run counter to the City of Sydney's sustainability and waste management goals. The current state of the Georgina Street Gates promotes greater waste accumulation and presents an unsustainable solution to handling waste.

In light of these issues, we earnestly request the City of Sydney's intervention in introducing appropriate landscaping measures at the gates to deter further waste disposal. By implementing strategic landscaping, we believe we can not only preserve the historical significance of the area but also contribute to a safer and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the community.

We look forward to seeing positive changes that will benefit the residents and visitors of Newtown.

Sincerely,

Sas Liyanage
