The Issue

In Florida, the black bear is a symbol of wilderness and natural beauty, coexisting peacefully with residents of the state. They are not aggressive animals by nature. We are the ones encroaching on their habitats as we expand our urban footprint, bringing about frequent encounters between humans and these majestic creatures.

The Florida bear hunt, as it currently stands, poses a serious threat to our local bear population. What was once a rare sight of these animals is now becoming common due to deforestation and habitat destruction. Our actions have cornered them into our neighborhoods in search of food and shelter—basic necessities that should naturally be available in their natural environments.

Despite the dangers they face due to habitat loss, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has allowed bear hunting. This decision must be reevaluated, as it fails to address the real problem and instead, places the blame on the bears. Statistics show that bear attacks are exceedingly rare and occur only when the animal is provoked. Studies have proven that non-lethal mitigation measures, such as securing trash and educating the public, significantly reduce human-bear conflicts more effectively than hunting.

The time has come to protect our Florida black bears and ensure their survival by ending sanctioned bear hunts. Protecting bears from hunting pressure would allow us to focus on conservation efforts that ensure they thrive near our homes without excessive fear. We urge policymakers to invest in research and education programs that foster coexistence rather than conflict.

Help us send a message to stop the bear hunt in Florida. Sign this petition to preserve our wildlife and promote harmonious cohabitation between humans and bears.
