End the Euthanasia List in Hillsborough — Support Pet Sanctuaries

End the Euthanasia List in Hillsborough — Support Pet Sanctuaries
The Issue
Hillsborough County has a serious crisis: too many healthy, adoptable pets are being euthanized simply because there is no space at the Pet Resource Center. In FY25, the county budgeted $11.46 million for animal care, but with more than $8.2 million already spent, only about $3 million remains. This money must be used wisely to save lives.
We call on the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners — Harry Cohen (District 1), Ken Hagan (District 2), Gwen Myers (District 3), Christine Miller (District 4), Donna Cameron Cepeda (District 5), Chris Boles (District 6), and Joshua Wostal (District 7) — along with Director of Pet Resources, Scott Trebatoski, to prioritize humane solutions that reduce euthanasia-for-space and support our community.
We respectfully propose that remaining and future animal care funds be dedicated to:
1. Pilot Pet Sanctuaries (150–200 capacity each): Smaller, community-based sanctuaries would give adoptable animals a safe haven and the time they need to find homes or fosters, instead of being euthanized due to overcrowding.
2. A Pet Food Pantry & Volunteer Delivery Program: Many pet surrenders happen because families face short-term financial struggles and cannot afford food or supplies. By creating a local pet food pantry — with volunteer delivery for those in need — the county could help families keep their pets, reduce shelter intake, and save taxpayer dollars.
These solutions are practical, cost-effective, and compassionate. With volunteer and community support, Hillsborough County can lead the way in ending unnecessary euthanasia and ensuring that pets and families stay together.
Please sign this petition to urge our commissioners to fund humane alternatives and protect the animals who depend on us.
