End the Cunningham Schoolhouse Field Trip & Reform Nebraska's Education Practices

The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, caregivers, students, and community members, call on Lincoln Public Schools to discontinue the Cunningham Schoolhouse field trip.

Why This Matters:

  • The current field trip presents a romanticized version of settler history, while glossing over the realities of segregation, oppression, and systemic injustice.
  • Students of color, and all students, deserve to learn honest history, not distorted narratives that erase Indigenous displacement, school segregation, and the trauma of Indian Boarding Schools.
  • These outdated practices reinforce harmful stereotypes and fail to create an inclusive learning environment for every child.

Our Requests:

  1. End the Cunningham Schoolhouse field trip in its current form.
  2. Replace it with educational experiences that highlight:
    • Indigenous history and resilience
    • School segregation and civil rights struggles
    • Contributions of historically marginalized communities in Nebraska
  3. Engage parents, educators, and community leaders in developing curriculum that reflects diversity, inclusion, and historical accuracy.

Our Commitment:

As parents and community members, we want every child to feel seen, respected, and empowered by the history they are taught. We believe in educational practices that honor truth, diversity, and justice.

In February 1968, African Americans in Omaha formed a “Negro School Board” to dismantle white supremacy in Omaha Public Schools. Article from the Omaha Star.

Broader Context:
We recognize that field trips and curricula similar to Cunningham exist in other Nebraska districts under different names and formats. While this petition is directed specifically to LPS, we encourage state leaders to ensure that all statewide school programming is free of distortion, omission, and systemic bias.

By signing this petition, we urge LPS leaders to act immediately to protect our children from harmful narratives and to build a more inclusive educational future.
