The Issue

Every brick, every stone, and every piece of material that goes into the creation of structures on our campuses tells a story. As someone deeply connected to the vibrancy and mission of the University of British Columbia (UBC), I feel it's my duty to draw attention to the concerning construction of the so-called "Ivory Tower."

What deeply troubles me and others in our community is not only that this structure represents an outdated notion of elitism often associated with ivory towers, but the source of its materials. The ivory being used in the construction was not ethically sourced. These elephants, whose noble lives are being compromised for construction needs, are genetically modified organisms (GMOs), farmed in distressing conditions using harmful pesticides. This is not a matter of tradition or necessity; it is a grave ethical concern that clashes with our core values.

Research indicates that GMO elephants, compared to wild ones, experience significant distress and health issues due to their unnatural and pesticide-rich environments. The use of such animals in construction goes beyond environmental desensitization—it is a moral dilemma and a symbol of exploitation that we should not endorse.

We are not opposed to growth or development at UBC, but we demand that it be conducted in an ethically and environmentally sound manner. Surely, there are sustainable alternatives that respect both our shared natural world and our commitment to ecological integrity. Certified sustainable materials must be sought and utilized so that our university reflects the principles we intend to impart onto others.

With your support, we can urge the administration of UBC to halt construction powered by unethical practices. Let us call for a reassessment of the project's sourcing and for the immediate adoption of transparent, ethical guidelines for material procurement.

This is a call to action to protect the dignity of all living beings and to enforce the values of sustainability and respect for our environment. Join me in taking a stand against the construction of the "Ivory Tower" at UBC. Your signature will help show that our community demands ethically sourced materials and a commitment to ethical practices.

Please, sign this petition to end the construction of the Ivory Tower on UBC until ethical, sustainable alternatives are employed.
