The Issue

In our 20s, many of us face a surprising recurrence of depression and mental health issues that society often expects to be resolved during our teenage years. As we transition into adulthood, there's a pervasive belief that these struggles are simply teenage problems, especially for those of us who are neurodivergent. The reality, however, is that these challenges often resurface or persist into our adulthood, leaving us feeling misunderstood and pressured to conceal our emotions due to societal expectations.

During our teenage years, mental health issues may be somewhat expected due to hormonal changes and uncertain times. We might have relied on coping mechanisms such as therapy, building supportive social circles, and creating a sense of stability. However, entering adulthood with the return of these issues can be incredibly isolating. Society tells us we should have "grown out" of these problems or have them "figured out." But adulthood doesn't magically erase them; instead, it often demands we hide them.

Stigmatization of adult mental health issues perpetuates silence and shame. It diminishes the real struggles that many face and deprives them of the understanding and support they need. Education about adult mental health and the continuation of supportive networks are essential. By acknowledging that these issues can persist or resurface, we can create a more inclusive environment where seeking help is not just for the young but for everyone.

We need to shift societal perspectives on mental health, recognizing that it's a lifelong journey. It's time to foster acceptance, promote education, and build support systems for adults facing mental health challenges. Join me in urging our communities and policymakers to end the stigma surrounding adult mental health issues.
