End St. John Bosco High School Faith Families

End St. John Bosco High School Faith Families

The Issue

Students lack enthusiasm when it comes to attending their faith families and perceive it merely as a time-filler.

Students often fail to recognize the significance of faith families, and at times, teachers may not adequately emphasize their importance. This lack of seriousness is evident when students engage with their phones during meetings or when faith families follow their own agenda rather than the ones provided for the day.

After speaking with several students, here are a few responses we have gotten regarding the current system of Faith Families:

  • “Faith families did nothing. The activities were meaningless, barely faith related, and overall a waste of time to be honest”
  • “It seemed like they put Faith Family [in the schedule] when they didn’t know what else to do for community time.”
  • “My faith family had little to no motivation even when they had the pizza competitions. Maybe 1-2 non-seniors were excited about that.”

Faith families hold significant importance as, when executed correctly, provide a platform for students to deepen their faith, foster a sense of belonging, and build a supportive community.

Unfortunately, as observed in the 2022-2023 school year, the 2023-2024 school year, and the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, the Faith Families program was not successful in the way that the school community was indifferent to the efforts that we put to help spread the message of Salesianity. We always get more complaints than compliments, and this can be damaging to the image of what it means to be Salesian as a result. Therefore, we propose that the best solution is to END Faith Families indefinitely until a solution can be achieved.
