End SCOTUS Lifetime Appointments

El problema

Public trust in the Supreme Court of the United States has never been lower.

In a true democracy, no position of power or authority should be immutable. This petition calls for an end to lifetime appointments for Supreme Court Justices, and advocates for the introduction of 12-year term limits. Such a change represents a fundamental step towards ensuring our judiciary is both reflective of and responsive to the evolving values and needs of American society.

In the eyes of many, lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court transform what should be our most impartial judicial institution into a battleground for partisan agendas. As we have seen in recent years, this actively undermines the foundational principles of democracy by diminishing the judiciary's role as an independent arbiter of the law.

Our proposal for 12-year term limits, equivalent to two Senate terms, offers a balanced approach. It preserves the independence necessary for judicial integrity while introducing a mechanism for renewal and inherent checks and balances. This ensures justices remain engaged with the realities of the time and that the court benefits from a diversity of thought and experience as time progresses.

Implementing term limits will require a Constitutional amendment; we believe the benefits to our democracy and judicial system justify the effort.

We call upon our fellow citizens and lawmakers to support this crucial reform. Sign this petition to voice your demand for ending lifetime Supreme Court appointments in favor of 12-year term limits. Together, let's take a stand for a more accountable, democratic, and responsive judiciary.
