End physical discipline of children in Australia… a smack is more than a smack

End physical discipline of children in Australia… a smack is more than a smack
The issue
My daughter was subjected to regular discipline through hitting by her father, who defends his actions by calling it ‘a smack'. This legally negates his actions… However, the reality remains: hitting, in any form, is inhumane and particularly appalling against someone who cannot defend themselves. It is crucial that we educate children on resolving conflicts without violence. This not only helps them develop lifelong values but can also potentially curb bullying among peers, as the old proverb says: 'actions speak louder than words'.
Australia has been a leader in many progressive reforms, such as banning physical abuse in schools back in the 1980s. Yet, at home, many children still endure physical punishment under the guise of discipline. This patchwork of protection needs harmonization. It’s time for Australia to join the 65 other countries that have already prohibited all forms of physical punishment by parents.
Spanking or any form of physical discipline is not only outdated but violates fundamental human rights. Every child deserves a safe, loving, and secure environment where they can thrive without fear. Recent studies have shown that non-violent forms of discipline tend to yield better behavioral outcomes and foster healthier psychological development. In contrast, physical punishment has been linked with increased aggression, antisocial behavior, and mental health issues in children.
Our government has previously demonstrated its commitment to protecting children in educational settings. Now, we call upon our lawmakers to extend that protection to every home across Australia. A legislative change to ban physical punishment by parents is a necessary step towards ensuring the well-being of all Australian children.
We urge the Australian Government to consider the evidence, listen to the voices of countless parents, educators, and child welfare experts, and take decisive action against the physical punishment of children. By instigating this change, we not only protect our nation's children but also instill a culture of respect and non-violence that will resonate for generations to come.
Sign this petition to demand an end to physical discipline at home and to promote more effective, respectful, and humane methods of child-rearing in Australia. Let’s forge a pathway to a more compassionate society, starting with our children.
