End Period Poverty: Make Menstrual Products Freely Available Across the UK

End Period Poverty: Make Menstrual Products Freely Available Across the UK
The Issue
As a woman living in the UK, I have personally experienced the financial burden of having to purchase period products every month. It is disheartening to think that many women and girls face similar struggles, unable to afford these essential items. Therefore, I am starting this petition to advocate for menstrual equality by urging the government and relevant authorities to make all period products freely available in shops, schools, colleges, and workspaces across the country.
Access to affordable period products is not only a matter of convenience but also a fundamental issue of gender equality. Menstruation is a natural bodily function that affects approximately half of the population at some point in their lives. It should not be treated as an additional financial burden or cause embarrassment due to lack of access.
Here are some relevant facts and statistics supporting this petition:
1. Period poverty affects many women and girls in the UK:
- According to Plan International UK, one in ten girls cannot afford sanitary products.
- A survey conducted by Plan International UK found that 49% of girls have missed an entire day of school because they couldn't afford period products.
- The same survey revealed that 68% felt uncomfortable discussing their periods with teachers or classmates.
2. The cost of period products adds up significantly over time:
- On average, women spend around £13 per month on menstrual supplies (BBC).
- This amounts to approximately £156 per year.
- Over a lifetime (assuming menstruation from ages 12-52), this can add up to over £5,000.
3. Other countries have taken steps towards menstrual equality:
- Scotland became the first country in the world to provide free universal access to period products through legislation passed unanimously by its parliament (BBC).
By making all period products freely available in shops, schools, colleges, and workspaces, we can alleviate the financial burden faced by many women and girls. This will ensure that no one is forced to compromise their health, education, or dignity due to lack of access to menstrual products.
Together, let's strive for menstrual equality in the UK. Sign this petition to urge the government and relevant authorities to take immediate action in making period products free for all. Let's create a society where menstruation is not a barrier but an opportunity for every woman and girl to thrive.
