End Penalties for Parents Taking Children on Term-Time Holidays

The Issue

For many hardworking parents like me, the cost of holidays during peak season is beyond our reach. The choice we make to travel during term time is not frivolous; it comes out of a need to manage our resources responsibly and provide our children with varied, enriching experiences, be it abroad or within the UK.

This should be a matter of personal choice, subject to sensible limitations. We're not advocating for constant disruptions to our children's education, but as our children's primary caregivers, we should have the flexibility to arrange for one term-time holiday per year that doesn't hurt our budgets. After all, "our children, our choices!"

Current regulations dictate that parents can be fined for taking their children out of school during term time without permission, with underlying assumptions about disrespectful attitudes toward education. However, in 2017/2018, 260,877 penalties were issued to parents for unauthorized absences for family holidays - a 75% increase from the previous year. This statistic demonstrates not an increasing disrespect for education, but increasing pressures on families to try to afford valuable life experiences for their children. (Source: Department of Education, England)

This petition seeks to bring change to these regulations. We believe a balanced approach, permitting one term-time holiday per year, could constitute a fair compromise between the need for consistent education and the financial realities facing many families. Sign the petition to end penalties for parents taking their children on term-time holidays.
