The issue

As someone who relies on the Disability Support Pension (DSP) in Australia, I face numerous financial challenges each day. Despite my best efforts to manage the costs of living with a disability, the stringent rules of Centrelink's partner income test often make life even more difficult. Not only does it place a burden on me, but it also negatively impacts my partner, who works hard to support both of us.

The partner income test calculates the combined income of both partners to determine eligibility and payment rates for certain Centrelink benefits. This system is unfair as it penalizes individuals like myself who rely on government support due to disability, simply because they share their life with someone earning a living. It assumes that my partner's income can wholly support our household, which isn't realistic given the cost of living and my medical expenses.

In my situation, my partner's income often reduces my payments or disqualifies me from receiving essential financial support entirely. This forces us into difficult financial decisions, placing strain on our relationship and limiting our opportunities to build a secure future.

Given that one in six Australians live with a disability and many receive the DSP, this issue is not isolated. A significant number of recipients face similar hardships and uncertainties due to the current testing process. Many households are struggling to balance financial burdens while trying to live with dignity.

We propose that Centrelink re-evaluates the partner income test rules. By allowing individuals on the DSP to retain their financial independence irrespective of their partner's earnings, we can ensure fairer support distribution, alleviate financial strain, and encourage more harmonious households.

Sign this petition to urge the Australian government to rethink the current partner income test with Centrelink. Let us stand together to support those with disabilities in leading a dignified life, free from unwarranted financial pressures.
