The Issue

The Problem

In the fashion industry, there is a problem. The issue is Brandy Melville is not inclusive in sizing. Brandy Melville is a very popular brand with a one size fits all policy. Their brand is built around a very specific body type. All the models are at least 5’7 and weigh 115 to 120 pounds, the average 20 year old 5’4 female weighs 130. There is a pressure to fit into their clothes because it is very popular. About 53-78 percent of teen girls report body dissatisfaction which some people link to Brandy Melville. The store feels very exclusive and they are open about not wanting certain body types to wear their clothes.

Why it Matters?

Part of the reason I am a member of this group is because I believe we share the value of fairness. The problem that is happening in my community is violating this value by not providing people with the sizes they need in clothing. The fact that discrimination is happening in my community is an issue. It matters to me because everyone deserves the same opportunities and equal ways to express themselves. Brandy Melville creates the idea that everyone should be the same size by using the label “one size fits most”. Women who are smaller have access to more clothes. Teenagers, fashion critics, and ex employees have raised concerns about this problem. Billie Eilish has come out and said that Brandy Melville started her body image struggles, “when I got to be about 11, I got obsessed with this brand called Brandy Melville. And they only sold clothes in one size. I was chubbier and I was obsessed with these clothes, but I’d buy a shirt and it wouldn’t fit me. That’s when my body problems started.” She adds “She explained that she loved Brandy Melville so much as a child that it caused her to develop a negative view of her appearance.”.Brandy Melville is using only certain types of models every single time to try to represent an “average teenager”, when their sizing isn't even for an average person. 24-25 inches is their waist size, but on average for a 13-19 year old is 32.6 inches. Dr. Sadler is the director of support services at Hackley and he states that brands such as Brandy Melville could be a huge cause in eating disorders, 35-57 percent of girls engage in a crash dieting fasting, self induced vomiting diet pills and laxatives. There are many effects that a brand can have on a person's life. Everyone should feel included in expressing themselves and feeling welcome in the fashion community, they shouldn't feel they have to change themselves to fit into the brand.

Solutions

We, the undersigned, ask that you address this problem by adding more colors and sizes to Brandy Melville. In addition we ask you to resize your clothing to fit any body type. Right now the company is discriminating against certain body types, this is leading to mental issues and is starting body issues for women at a young age.
