Ban Breed Restrictions in Wake County
The Issue
Breed Restrictions has become something that we are starting to see all over the US. One of the reasons apartment complexes have breed restrictions is due to liability. However there are many reasons why families are being effected in negative ways due to breed restrictions.
Due to inflation, there has been a LARGE change in NC and that has been the cost of rent. Imagine living in a place , working two-three jobs, and coming home to your furry friend that gives you that sense of peace. Now imagine its time to renew your lease and the rent is going up $300-$400(which is happening in parts of Raleigh, Cary , and Durham), you barely can afford the rent you are paying now, and your dog is a breed that would be considered "aggressive". However with trying to be on the positive side you start your search for an apartment that is in your price range so that way you can still afford rent. One of the main things you see is breed restrictions and you have to cross many apartments off your list. I don't know about you but that could be stressful and depression because you can begin to overthink and worry about what ifs. What if I can't find a place to live ? Where will my dog go?
As of late a lot of Animal shelters are overly crowded due to people not having a place to live. As much as animal shelters do to make sure these furry friends find furever homes, we have to lend a helping hand to. If we can remove breed restrictions that would allow people to be able to keep their furry friend and also clear space in the shelter for animals that may be found as strays. That would also allow for people to find an apartment in their price range and not have to worry about the stress of "I wonder if they have breed restrictions".
To me this is so URGENT and so important! I say that because the percentage of homelessness has been on a rise and 10% of that population have a pet that they care for. Twice out of the month I offer a vegan meals on wheels and driving around Durham and Raleigh you see people that are asking for help that have a furry friend with them.
Please share and sign! Reach out to the management offices that own the different apartment complexes and lets make a difference. I stand for change and I stand for coming together and finding solutions!
