End mistreatment of women in Ethiopia
The Issue
Growing up in Ethiopia, I have witnessed firsthand the systemic mistreatment and discrimination that women face on a daily basis. Our society has long treated women as second-class citizens, denying them the basic rights and dignity they deserve. This petition is personal to me because it is not just about numbers or statistics, but about real women—mothers, sisters, daughters—whose lives are being irrevocably harmed.
In Ethiopia, countless women are subjected to physical abuse, denied access to education, and face significant barriers in workplaces entrenched with gender bias. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, around 23% of Ethiopian women report having experienced physical violence by a partner. This is a tragic manifestation of deep-rooted gender inequality. Education is also a significant hurdle; the female literacy rate in Ethiopia is at a staggering low, with only around 48% of women aged 15 years and older being able to read and write, as reported by UNESCO.
Yet, the problem is not insurmountable. We believe in a better Ethiopia—one where women are not marginalized but empowered. To address this, there must be immediate legislation to criminalize all forms of gender-based violence, uphold women’s rights, and enforce harsher penalties for violators. The government should also prioritize education for girls and women, making it accessible and mandatory, which will enable them the opportunity to carve out a new future.
We urge the Ethiopian government, policymakers, and international human rights organizations to take decisive action towards dismantling the structural barriers that lead to these egregious human rights violations. Women's voices need to be heard and respected not only as a token gesture on paper but through real, impactful changes that will enhance their freedom and equality.
