End misogyny in Marvel Comics! Fire Tim Seeley & Tom Brevoort!
The Issue
Marvel Comics has been publishing stories infused with misogyny and problematic portrayals of their female characters. Recently, the situation has escalated, with certain narratives amplifying these issues significantly. This year, an incident involving Magik—a beloved character known for her resilience and strength—has brought many of these concerns to a head. After achieving tremendous success with Marvel Rivals and a solo run beautifully executed by Ashley Allen, the X-Men team chose to depict Magik, a victim of CSA, to endures even more traumatic sexual experiences. Shockingly, she is portrayed as being submissive and 'thankful' for her abhorrent treatment.
To see her in this position is insulting of a character who has meant so much to many people during her 40 year old history. To have her be raped again in that position is nothing short of a rape fetish. Tim Seeley ran away after fan outcry and blamed it on a very minimal few 'death threats'. This was just him dodging responsibility and not confronting the issue head on or accepting any form of responsibility for his problematic misogynistic story telling. Even saying 'fuck everyone'. Dodging and blocking anyone on blusky who dared even question his comic.
Tom Brevoort himself has famously said 'were she not already dead, i'd delight in dropping a concrete block on Illyana Rasputin's head, so annoying did i find her Magik persona'. So it is safe to assume he has it out for this victim. This is why this story was accepted.
To make matters worse- despite public outcry. Later on in the event they push a pregnancy fetish on us out of nowhere with no explanation.
'No way they also gave a pregnancy plot to THE woman who’s infamous for never having had a relationship in her entire 40 year history…? With some rando just created for this event' @karna2666 said on twitter.
Woman do not exist for people to breed for their 'storylines' without any meaning or purpose. Women do not exist for you to abuse their sex like they're a sex doll. With everything going around about Epstein and the state of the world now- we don't need this horrible storytelling pushing women further down into despair. You wouldn't do this to Spider-Man. You wouldn't do this to Captain America or Iron Man. So why are you treating Magik and so many other women like this?
Despite all the outcry however, Marvel Comics continues to allow misogynistic stories such as these to continue and does not take responsibility for their actions.
This narrative is incredibly damaging, especially since many women have found inspiration in Magik's journey of empowerment and overcoming adversity. By continuing to produce content that perpetuates misogynistic themes, Marvel Comics is undermining the progress we strive for in gender equality within entertainment. This kind of storytelling sends a detrimental message to audiences, particularly young readers who look up to these characters as role models.
The creative forces behind these narratives, including Tim Seeley and Tom Brevoort, hold significant responsibility in the production of stories that shape public perception and cultural norms. Their decision to portray Magik in such a negative and harmful light indicates a critical need for change within Marvel's creative team—a shift towards more thoughtful, compassionate, and empowering storytelling.
We demand accountability from Marvel Comics and urge the company to re-evaluate the leadership of Tim Seeley and Tom Brevoort. It is imperative that Marvel embraces narratives that uplift and accurately represent women, fostering an environment where all audiences can feel respected and inspired.
Please join us in calling for Marvel Comics to take decisive action against misogyny in their storylines and characters. Sign this petition to demand better representation for female characters by urging Marvel to bring on a leadership team committed to change.
