The Issue

My heart is shattered, and my family is devastated. Our beloved dog Skye, a loyal and loving family pet we had cared for since she was just four weeks old, was brutally killed by police. Skye was not being aggressive; she was merely barking because the officers were arresting my son. In her confusion and distress, she barked, a natural reaction for any dog protecting its family. Tragically, her actions were misinterpreted, and she was hit by police batons, which led to her untimely and unnecessary death.

The labeling of XL Bullies as inherently dangerous by law enforcement and in public perception is a widespread issue that results in tragic outcomes like ours. Despite the good nature and loyal companionship they offer, these dogs are often unfairly targeted and subjected to discrimination simply based on their breed. According to the American Temperament Test Society, many XL Bullies actually score higher in temperament tests compared to other breeds widely considered friendly and safe. Yet, this positive temperament is overshadowed by negative stereotypes and fear-mongering.

We must change the policies that permit labeling these dogs as inherently dangerous without proper assessment. Police training protocols should be revised to avoid such tragedies. Officers need better education on dog behavior and on how to handle situations involving pets in a non-lethal manner. Additionally, public awareness campaigns should be launched to dispel myths surrounding XL Bullies, highlighting their typically gentle nature and loyal companionship.

Let us prevent further loss and heartache by reforming law enforcement policies and practices regarding animal interactions. By doing so, we can create a fairer society for all dogs and their families. Please, sign this petition to urge policymakers to stop the unwarranted killing of XL Bullies and push for the adoption of humane and informed handling procedures. Together, we can protect our pets from becoming the next victims of misunderstanding and prejudice.
