The Issue

Restore Referee Discretion

Use video as an aid rather than an absolute ruler. The referee should look at the footage to catch clear, obvious errors. If it takes three minutes of drawing lines to find an offside, it by definition is not a clear advantage. This keeps the safety net of video playback while removing the clinical, rigid over-officiating.

Measure by the Trunk of the Body

Judging offside strictly by the torso or trunk makes perfect sense. A player tilting forward or having a long arm does not give them a head start in a footrace. The center of mass (the trunk) determines their true position and speed. The torso is large, stable, and easy to see on a monitor. It eliminates the absurdity of tracking a player’s shirt sleeve, knee cap, or toe tip.

If appendages and body tilt are ignored, a referee looking at a video monitor can make a definitive decision in five seconds just by looking at the two players' chests. The sport would immediately return to a common-sense definition of fairness.
