I was terminated from my job for a positive drug test, despite the fact that Cannabis consumption is legal in Michigan. This experience has opened my eyes to an unjust gap in our state's employment laws that allows employers to discriminate against individuals who consume lawful Cannabis outside of work.

Michigan voters showed up to the polls in favor of Cannabis, in (2) separate elections (MED Prop 08-01, REC Prop 18-01). Despite the successful  legalization efforts, Michigan workers continue to face exclusionary  and disciplinary treatment for using a substance that is perfectly legal within the state's borders. This creates an unfair, foggy situation for both the workforce and leadership alike.

One's lawful personal choices shouldn't result in professional consequences. It is time we align our employment discrimination laws with Michigan's position on Cannabis.
