End Mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspections in Delaware

End Mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspections in Delaware
The Issue
As a passionate car enthusiast living in Delaware, I've grown increasingly frustrated with the escalating requirements for registering a motor vehicle. My sentiments are echoed by many friends, family members, and colleagues who have shared their own experiences of dealing with the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles. From the dismissive tyrannical treatment by staff to minor issues preventing them from acquiring registration or even temporary registration. Ask yourself, how many times you have had to go back and forth redoing inspection over something that isn't even legitimate safety matter. Taking advantage of the public through controlling their ability to legally commute in a registered vehicle to and from needed daily activity over something as simple as something like a side marker light bulb out is wrong, it's clear that our current system is flawed and oppressive.
Delaware is one of only 17 states that still require annual or biennial vehicle safety inspections. While these inspections were initially designed to promote road safety, studies suggest they may not be as effective as intended. A report from The National Bureau of Economic Research found no evidence that vehicle inspection programs reduce accident rates (NBER, 2015).
Moreover, these mandatory inspections impose an unnecessary mental, emotional, and social burden on residents and can lead to unwarranted stress when minor issues prevent successful registration. This feels like an infringement on our freedom - we live in the USA where personal liberties are highly valued.
It's time for change. It's time for Delaware to join the majority of states that have abolished mandatory motor vehicle inspections without seeing an increase in road accidents.
We call upon our local representatives and lawmakers to reconsider this outdated regulation and put an end to mandatory motor vehicle inspections in Delaware. Please sign this petition if you too believe it's time for change.
