This animal was one of several thousand cattle who were loaded onto the Brahman Express on Saturday 7/03/26, for export to feedlots in Indonesia for fattening then slaughter. The ship left port the next morning, ETA Jakarta 15/03/26. It is not known how many cattle left our port on this ship, but the vessel is reported to have a capacity of around 4,500 feeder cattle or 2,200 heavier cattle. Last year 78,856 cattle were exported from Townsville, 58,925 cattle to Indonesia (58,765 "feeder" and 160 described as "productive" animals) and 19,931 "slaughter" cattle to Vietnam.
A second ship the Dareen will load more animals for export this week. Australia has been exporting cattle to Asia since the 1880's. It's time to end this cruel and unnecessary trade that treats living animals as cargo.
While the cruelty of live export continues for cattle shipped from Townsville and other ports including Portland, Darwin and Fremantle, the war in the Middle East appears to have stopped live sheep exports by sea from Fremantle, at least until ships can safely travel to that region. The Al Kuwait, which was to load around 55,000 sheep for export to the Middle East remains anchored off the WA coast, while the sheep are believed to still be in a pre-export feedlot. Sadly, there will be no happy ending for these sheep as if they are not exported, they will most likely be slaughtered in a local abattoir.
If you agree that this cruel trade which treats living animals as cargo needs to end, please send the PM a politely worded message, asking his government to do as the UK and NZ have done and end ALL live animal exports for fattening or slaughter. https://www.pm.gov.au/contact#no-back
