The issue

Dingoes have been an integral part of K’gari’s ecosystem for thousands of years, playing a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance of this unique environment. They are not just wildlife; they are a cornerstone of the island's biodiversity, and hold deep cultural significance to the Traditional Owners of the land. Tragically, recent measures have led to the unnecessary deaths of both humans and dingoes, highlighting the urgent need for a shift in strategy. This petition calls upon the Queensland Government to end lethal dingo control measures on K’gari and to work with Traditional Owners to adopt a new approach focused on non-lethal coexistence.

The continued killing of dingoes is not a sustainable solution. It poses serious threats to the ecological balance and undermines the cultural heritage of K’gari. We propose that the government, in collaboration with Traditional Owners and conservation groups like The Dingo Conservancy, develops a comprehensive management plan. This plan should prioritize proven coexistence methods that manage human activities instead of resorting to culling these iconic creatures.

Research shows that non-lethal measures, such as community education, effective waste management, and visitor behavior protocols, significantly mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. On islands like K’gari, where the ecosystem is delicate yet resilient, such measures are urgently required. By implementing these practices, we can ensure the safety of residents and tourists, while preserving the natural heritage of the island fora sustainable future.

Moreover, to honour the legacy of those like Piper James, who tragically lost their lives, this shift in policy becomes crucial. The memory of Piper and the dingoes who have been unnecessarily killed demands a respectful and proactive response. A harmonious coexistence with the land of K’gari is not just an ideal; it is an achievable reality that respects all forms of life.

Please sign this petition to urge the Queensland Government to stop lethal dingo control and be guided by Tradional Owners on how to adopt strategies that allow for coexistence and respect for both the island's ecology and its cultural history. With your support, we can usher in a new era of sustainable and humane wildlife management on K’gari.
