The Issue

In the heart of St. Vrain Valley schools something is stressing us middle schoolers out: iReady assessments. Imagine one test score determining your future classes—it’s terrifying. I remember sitting in front of a screen, feeling the weight of the score. All it took was one bad day, and my academic track was in jeopardy. More than just a personal nightmare for me, iReady has been critiqued by students, parents, and educators nationwide for its inaccuracy and potential harm.

The iReady platform is intended to aid educators in helping with your academic journey, but ironically, it does the opposite for many of us. An analysis by educational professionals has revealed that standardized testing tools like iReady can lead to increased anxiety, misrepresent the whole student, and create a one-size-fits-all system that fails to recognize individual learning paths. There are countless stories similar to mine where students feel trapped by algorithms instead of being nurtured by a thoughtful educational process.

St. Vrain schools pride themselves on fostering unique learning environments, but the reliance on iReady assessments is in stark contrast to this mission. Educators should have the freedom to design a curriculum that considers multiple forms of assessments—projects, interactive activities, and regular feedback sessions—to truly cater to diverse learning styles. By prioritizing holistic evaluation over rigid digital assessments, we can ensure that every student's potential is genuinely recognized and cultivated.

We are not alone in this. Across the nation, school districts have started to reassess and scale back reliance on iReady and other standardized assessments due to these concerns.

Let’s call on the St. Vrain Valley School District to lead the way in educational reform, demonstrating a commitment to personalized and impactful learning experiences. It's time to step away from placing undue stress and restriction on our students’ academic lives.

Sign this petition to encourage the cessation of iReady assessments in middle schools across the St. Vrain Valley School District, providing a more flexible and fair approach to education. Let's move towards a future where students are seen as more than just a test score.
