The Issue

We, the citizens of Shreveport, Louisiana and concerned individuals across the nation, come together to address a grave injustice that has befallen one of our community members. We seek your support in urging the appropriate authorities to grant relief from an excessive sentence imposed under Louisiana's multi bill statute.

In this particular case, an individual was convicted for a 2-year offense but shockingly received a life sentence due to the application of this statute. This disproportionate punishment not only defies reason but also undermines the principles of fairness and justice that our legal system should uphold.

The multi bill statute was originally intended to target repeat offenders who pose a genuine threat to society. However, its implementation has resulted in numerous instances where individuals with non-violent or minor offenses have been subjected to unduly harsh sentences. This practice perpetuates systemic injustices within our criminal justice system and fails to address rehabilitation or provide opportunities for redemption.

To shed light on this issue, let us consider some relevant facts and statistics:

1. According to data from The Sentencing Project (2019), Louisiana has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Such excessive sentencing practices contribute significantly to this alarming statistic.

2. A study conducted by researchers at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law (2018) found that over 80% of people serving life sentences under Louisiana's multi bill law were convicted for non-violent offenses.

3. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) highlights how these draconian sentencing practices disproportionately impact communities already marginalized by poverty and racial disparities.

It is crucial that we advocate for fair sentencing laws that prioritize rehabilitation rather than perpetuating cycles of punishment without purpose or proportionality. By signing this petition, you are joining us in demanding:

1. An immediate review and reconsideration of cases where individuals have received excessive sentences under Louisiana's multi bill statute for non-violent or minor offenses.

2. The implementation of evidence-based sentencing practices that focus on rehabilitation, redemption, and reintegration into society.

3. A comprehensive reform of Louisiana's criminal justice system to address the root causes of over-incarceration and promote fairness for all citizens.

In this particular instance, the individual did not hurt anyone, no property was damaged and there was never any intent to harm anyone. He was just evading the police.

His charge. Aggravated flight from a officer. 0 to 2 year charge at the time of arrest.

Together, we can make a difference in the life of this individual and countless others who have fallen victim to unjust sentencing practices. Let us stand united against excessive punishment and advocate for a more just and compassionate society.
