End Inhumane Treatment of Racing Animals and Enforce Owner Responsibility for Injuries

The Issue

I've stood by helplessly, witnessing the tragic ends of horses who fall during races such as the Grand National. Broken legs, profound injuries, and the unimaginable cost to their lives. Horses destroyed for an injury that cost too much to treat. This abhorrent practice extends to greyhounds too, who after reaching the end of their racing careers, are deemed worthless simply because they no longer turn a profit.

We live in an age where such disregard for sentient lives is unacceptable. Yet, year after year, we continue to witness this mistreatment. In 2017 alone, more than 1,000 racing greyhounds died or were killed according to the Greyhound Board of Great Britain. Similarly, The British Horseracing Authority reported that in 2019, 186 horses lost their lives on British racetracks. What’s more alarming is that these numbers do not represent retired and injured animals, discarded when they no longer bring in revenue(Source: The Guardian).

It is only fair that responsibility for the well-being and treatment of these creatures, even in the case of injuries, rest in the hands of those who profit from their labor. Moreover, it is high time that we demand thorough risk-assessments for any race an animal participates in, to prioritise their safety.

We call upon lawmakers and industry regulators to put an end to such inhumane practices and foster a culture of responsibility and respect for these animals. The cost of racing enjoyment should never be an animal's life. Stand with us in demanding lasting change for the welfare of these animals.
