End Inhumane Treatment of Inmates at Bureau of Prisons FCI Victorville Medium 1.
The Issue
This dire situation hits close to home for my fiancé, an inmate at FCI Victorville Medium 1, whose accounts of mistreatment and sub-human conditions resonate deeply with me. He describes this correctional institution as a living hell and reports the frequent and excessive punishments doled out to inmates. The regular placement of inmates on lockdown, the denial of access to commissary and withholding of mail delivery for months has become habitual for this facility. The administration plans to restrict phone calls to just two per day, further isolating these individuals from their loved ones.
Our loved ones struggle to comprehend why they and fellow inmates cannot simply serve out their sentences in peace. Why instead must they endure the degrading treatment, frequently spoken to as if they were less than human? The unhealthy environment at FCI Victorville Medium 1 does not only exacerbate the difficulties of inmates serving their terms but also makes rehabilitation much more challenging.
We know from studies that punitive prison environments tend to create higher levels of violence and recidivism among incarcerated individuals, being detrimental to ultimate goals of punishment and rehabilitation (Prison Policy Initiative, 2017). To this end, we call upon the power of the authorities, lawmakers, and the Department of Justice to urgently address the inhumane treatment of inmates at the Bureau of Prisons FCI Victorville Medium 1.
The time for change is now. In the name of human rights and the spirit of justice, we implore you to rectify these issues. Sign this petition and lend your voice to the silenced, the disenfranchised, and the forgotten. Together, we can hold the facility accountable and demand a humane, dignified treatment of inmates regardless of their sentences.
