End Inhumane Treatment of Fish as Prizes at Fairs

The Issue

Recently, I attended a fair in Grain, near Allhallows, Rochester, UK, where I witnessed a heartbreaking scene - fish as prizes. These defenceless creatures were kept in small plastic bags quarter-filled with water, in temperatures peaking at 29 degrees. The distress and discomfort experienced by these fish, some of whom were in the bags for two straight days, was palpable. In the face of our concerns, the stall attendants did nothing but laugh.

Fish are sentient beings who are capable of suffering. They need adequate space and oxygen-rich water to survive, both of which were cruelly denied to these fish. The RSPCA specifies that much better welfare standards need to be provided for fish-- they at the very least require appropriate space and proper care. The fish at the fair were sufferering from both physical and environmental conditions that were far from the minimum acceptable standards. This inhumane and irresponsible practice has to stop.

If cruel practices like this are allowed to continue, it sends the wrong message about our treatment of animals. Additionally, it shows a dismissive attitude towards the life and rights of non-human beings. We want to raise our children in a world where empathy and caring for all life are the norms, not the exceptions. The disregard shown by the stall holder is not representative of the values we wish to uphold in Allhallows.

Together, we can push for a change in the legislation for fairground stalls, banning the use of live animal prizes. Let's urge the local authorities and event organisers to keep respect for all creatures at the heart of their operations. This starts with renouncing the use of fish as prizes. Let's speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Demand fair treatment for all creatures, big and small. Join us in ending the needless suffering of fish. Sign this petition.
