End Inhumane Conditions for Inmates at USP Canaan

End Inhumane Conditions for Inmates at USP Canaan
The Issue
I am writing this petition driven by a deep personal concern for the living conditions of a loved one incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary, Canaan (USP Canaan). The inhumane conditions these inmates endure are a gross violation of their basic human rights.
Overcrowding, the constant lockdowns for weeks to months at a time, the no contact with family or information given to family are just a few of the realities that inmates of USP Canaan are subjected to daily. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), prisoners in the United States are living under inhumane conditions, that breach the Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.
Furthermore, constant lockdowns for weeks & months at a time, the no contact with their families and the families not being able to get information is causing a rise in mental health issues and violence in prisons. In concrete terms, my loved one, along with many others at USP Canaan, are constantly locked down along with numerous other prisoners.
Time has come to put an end to this humanitarian crisis. It's time to uphold and respect the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their incarceration status. Let’s call upon the Federal Bureau of Prisons and local representatives to thoroughly investigate these inhumane conditions at USP Canaan and to take immediate concrete measures to rectify them.
The inmates at this facility go weeks and months without talking to loved ones or their children. The prison never answers the phone to family & when they do you have called atleast days straight multiple times. They aren’t very helpful when trying to get information as to how to contact counselors for your loved ones. The inmates only get put on modified lockdowns for 3-4 days after doing complete lockdowns and then they go right back on complete lockdown not allowing children & family to visit their loved ones after traveling from all over to visit. How is this a prison for inmates to get transferred to so that programs can be completed only for them to be on constant lockdowns & unable to complete these programs. The system is suppose to help rehabilitate these individuals for the real world & this is not the case. All of these things are inhumane. Prisons like this is why these inmates get out & reoffend because they can’t mentally deal with the real world because of constant lockdowns. Help change this & put a stop to this.
