Our son and hundreds of others have been subjected to horrific treatment by guards in Salinas Valley State Prison, California, correctional facilities. The toilets in his facility are often not operational, leading to unsanitary conditions that violate human rights. Worse still, he has been caught in continuous lockdowns, even when his building wasn't involved in any incidents. Such measures punish everyone indiscriminately and unnecessarily, denying inmates access to vital programs and personal visitation. The food is another issue, where inedible meals are the norm, compromising the health and well-being of inmates.

Medical distress situations are ignored too frequently, endangering lives. When a violent act by another inmate occurred, the lack of response was utterly shocking, showcasing a disregard for inmate safety and dignity. These conditions are not just unacceptable; they are illegal, breaching both state and federal laws, and go against the principles of a fair justice system.

California's correctional facilities must undergo critical reforms to ensure humane conditions are standard, not the exception. We call for independent oversight and accountability mechanisms to monitor these facilities regularly. The implementation of regular, unannounced inspections by third-party organizations could drastically improve transparency and compliance with established standards.

Furthermore, accountability should extend directly to correctional officers. Implementing thorough training programs emphasizing respect for inmates' rights and humanity must be mandated. Personnel responsible for violence or negligence should face strict legal consequences. The inhumane treatment and lack of services, in addition to lockdowns that never end, contribute to the violence at this prison!

There needs to be a structured review of the lockdown protocols to prevent abuse while ensuring the safety of everyone. Procedures to address medical needs should be heightened, with trained medical staff available promptly to assess and respond to emergencies.
