End Illegal Animal Trade and Trafficking in Indonesia

End Illegal Animal Trade and Trafficking in Indonesia
The Issue
In Indonesia, there are laws against poaching, making it illegal to trade or harm protected species. Despite this, the prosecution rates are very low with only a handful of cases where tiger and rhino poachers were jailed. We need to call for action and protect these endangered species before they are lead to extinction. It is unacceptable that Indonesia is famed for its wildlife biodiversity and yet the illegal catching, caging and selling of its wildlife continues widely unregulated.
Sundaland, Indonesia has many at-risk species, specifically in Bukit Barisan National Park, our chosen area.
At-risk species:
- Mainly poaching of rhinos and tigers
- Home to many other endemic plants and species
- 500 Sumatran Elephants (25% of remaining species)
- 17-24 Sumatran Rhinos (Only 100 total in the world remaining)
- Over 300 bird species (i.e. severely threatened Sumatran ground-cuckoo
- Of the mammal species, 22 are Asian, not found elsewhere in the archipelago and 15 are confined to the Indonesian region, including the endemic Sumatran orang-utan.” (WHS, UNESCO)
