End ICE policing our communities
End ICE policing our communities
The Issue
I believe in humanity and treating people with decency. That's why I am deeply troubled by the aggressive practices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in our communities. What once was a nation of opportunity and promise is now becoming a landscape where families live in constant fear of raids and separation.
ICE has continually overstepped its boundaries, conducting sweeps that lead to the detention of many individuals who have committed no crimes. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), these raids often occur without warrants and target places vital to the immigrant community, such as schools, hospitals, and churches. These practices undermine the trust and safety we aim to build in our neighborhoods.
Statistics from the Pew Research Center reveal that over 11 million undocumented immigrants reside in the U.S., and a large portion have built their lives here peacefully, contributing to our society and economy. Many work jobs that are essential to our nation’s functioning, yet they live in a perpetual state of anxiety, worried they might be the next target of ICE's sweeping enforcement measures.
We can change this. I call upon local and national leaders to impose strict limitations on ICE. This includes ceasing operations that demonize and dehumanize immigrants and instead fostering policies that focus on integration, support, and protection of human rights. Cities like Los Angeles and New York have made significant progress in declaring themselves as sanctuary cities—let's expand this movement.
Engaging in conversations, advocating for immigrant rights, and supporting legislative changes can make a profound difference. I urge our elected officials to consider the human aspect of their policies and to remember the foundational values of empathy and understanding that America is known for.
Together, we can build safer and more humane communities. Please join me in signing this petition to end the aggressive policing tactics of ICE in our communities. Let us speak for those who may not have a voice and fight for a nation that treats all individuals with respect and dignity. Sign now to make a change.
