End Harsh Isolation for Hair Colour Violations at Sprowston Community Academy
The Issue
Students at Sprowston Community Academy are being unfairly punished over unnatural hair colour. Dying your hair can lead to weeks in internal isolation, causing academic barriers, social barriers and negative impacts of mental health.
The way the behaviour system works is setting troubled children up for failure. Additional punishments are given at a significantly higher rate when already in exclusion. Furthermore there is in practice little attempt to offer education to pupils in isolation. In the case of unnatural hair colour we believe this is unfair.
The simplest solution is to change the policy on hair colour. In a modern professional setting unnatural hair colour is no longer a barrier, and our school should reflect this. We would also ask that the school reviews it's use of internal isolation for minor, non-violent rule breaking. Our school could be a happier and more colourful place.
