End Harassment of Teachers by V.I.O and Police Officers in Oyo State

The Issue

On a recent Monday morning, I was stopped at around 7 AM while traveling back to work in Okeho, Oyo State. I encountered the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) in Iseyin who seized my motorcycle along the Iseyin-Okeho road, near the LAUTECH Iseyin Main Gate. Despite my pleas and explanations that I am a teacher striving to reach my workplace on time to comply with supervisors' inspections, my words fell on deaf ears. As a newly recruited Batch B TESCOM teacher who has yet to receive a salary, I couldn’t afford to bribe them. Despite these explanations, the officer refused to release the vehicle and did not accept any alternative arrangements. My pleas were ignored, and the motorcycle remains in the officer’s custody.

When I asked what I could do, one of the officers suggested I call the number on the teller to lodge a complaint and to inform them that I am a teacher in Oyo State resuming work. I made the call, but the situation did not improve, leading me to suspect that the stop was pre‑planned. This road is one I travel every day; I have greeted the officers there regularly since I was employed, yet on that Monday morning they acted as if they had never seen me before.

Unfortunately, my experience is not unique. Many teachers in Oyo State face similar harassment and intimidation from the VIO, police officers, and other road authorities. These unjust practices not only disrupt our daily lives but also impede our ability to perform our crucial roles as educators. Such actions undermine the morale of teachers and diminish the quality of education we strive to provide to our students.

The Oyo State government must take immediate action to address this issue. We demand that the relevant authorities investigate the conduct of the VIO and police officers in Oyo State, and implement policies that prevent further harassment of teachers and other motorists. Training programs on ethical conduct and respect for individuals' rights should be mandatory for all officers.

Furthermore, we call for the establishment of a clear and accessible complaint mechanism for those who encounter mistreatment or abuse. Teachers and other citizens should feel safe and respected when traveling on our roads.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the call for justice and fairness for teachers. Let us unite to end harassment and change the system. Sign to demand action now.
