The Issue

Growing up in Hamilton County, many of my classmates and close friends are immigrants, many of whom struggle with the English language as they navigate the complexities of a new country. They are innocent individuals—children who are simply trying to fit into a society that often feels hostile and unwelcoming. The impact of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) collaboration with local law enforcement has had devastating consequences, tearing families apart and instilling fear in our community.

It is heartrending to witness the pain of friends who have lost parents, siblings, or relatives, ripped away from their homes and support systems. These students are not criminals or gang members; they are striving to build a future, contributing to our community in myriad positive ways. Yet, the constant threat of deportation looms large over their lives, made ever more pressing by the Hamilton County Sheriff's cooperation agreements with ICE.

Local collaboration with ICE undercuts trust between law enforcement and the immigrant community, pushing these families further into the shadows. This partnership is not mandated by federal law; local officials have the power to cease these cooperation agreements. Indeed, many communities across the United States have made the conscious choice to end such collaborations, opting instead for inclusive, safer environments.

Ending ICE collaboration in Hamilton County is not just a moral imperative but a realistic goal. By discontinuing these agreements, we can foster a community that values all its members, respects human rights, and promotes safety and inclusion over fear and division.

I urge you to join me in calling on Hamilton County officials to end the Sheriff's cooperation agreements with ICE. Stand with us in advocating for a community that does not condone tearing apart families and endangering the well-being of our friends. Sign this petition to demand change and protect the future of our immigrant children. Your signature is a step towards justice and empathy, paving the way for a true community transformation.
